Heartworm Disease is a potentially fatal disease that is transmitted by infected mosquitos. We are not in a heartworm endemic area, however with pets travelling heartworm is a concern. If you plan on travelling to a heartworm area, prevention is easy, so your dog can safely travel with you.
How does a dog get heartworms?
Heartworm is transferred by a mosquito feeding off an infected animal and then feeding off an unprotected one. Heartworm travels in the blood of the animal and eventually turns into large worms that make their home in blood vessels or lungs.
