Fleas and ticks are parasites that are very small. Protect your cat with a parasite prevention plan.
Fleas and ticks are a common problem on Vancouver Island due to our mild weather. These external parasites can cause skin issues and transmit diseases to both pet and their owners.
If your cat is itching or licking excessively or if you see black specks in the fur or the places where your cat sleeps you should check your cat for fleas. If humans are getting bit in the household this could mean there is a flea infestation in the environment that needs to be controlled.
Fleas jump on your cat and take a blood meal. During this process, they cause skin irritation and secondary infection, and in an extreme infestation, severe anemia can occur. Cats can be infected with tapeworm by ingesting fleas that carry an immature tapeworm.
Using year-round flea control gives you the confidence that your cat is free from external parasites and minimizes the opportunity to spread disease and infestations.
Flea control can be offered in a variety of formulations. There are topical products that are well tolerated in cats. These products can be offered in monthly, or a 3-month regime and some products can be supplied in combination with deworming medications. Whatever choice you make your cat will thank you!
