Bringing your puppy to be vaccinated is an important part of being a dog owner. The positive effects of vaccinating vastly outweigh the negative. Bringing your puppy to a veterinary hospital also helps to socialize and can create a bond between your veterinarian and puppy, creating a healthy relationship for the future.

What vaccinations do you provide for new puppies?

We recommend vaccination for the most common diseases which are Canine distemper (this vaccine includes distemper, adenovirus type 2, parainfluenza and parvovirus vaccine). Leptospirosis Vaccine, Bordetella Vaccine to prevent a canine cough, Lyme and Rabies vaccine. There are other vaccinations available for your puppy depending on his or her lifestyle and should be discussed with your veterinarian.

Why is it important to vaccinate your puppy?

Vaccinating your puppy protects them from picking up potentially fatal and costly diseases. Preventative medicine is always preferable to treating a disease. Puppies may be born with the ability to fight disease from antibodies passed on to them from their mother’s milk. We can never be sure how many antibodies were received by your puppy, as it is dependent on how well the mother was vaccinated and how well the puppy nursed as an infant. Maternal antibodies can interfere with the immunity produced by the puppy vaccinations, so in order to protect the puppies, we vaccinate at intervals until they are over 16 weeks of age.

At what age should I bring in my puppy for its vaccinations?

Puppies should be vaccinated starting at 8 weeks of age. If the puppy is rehomed prior to 8 weeks, vaccines should be started sooner than later.

How should I prepare my puppy for its first vaccination visit?

When arriving for your puppy’s first visit it is helpful to know if the puppy has had any worming treatments, what diet is being provided and the frequency of meals.
Having a history of where the puppy came from, any medical issues to date and any history of medical issues in the puppy’s mother or father are all helpful in creating a complete medical record of your puppy. Bring your puppies favourite kind of treats along!
