Most kittens and cats are not afraid to make their feelings known. But, even the most expressive felines cannot give us insight into the inner-workings of their body. This is when diagnostics like urinalysis and fecal exams come into play. They are important tools here in our practice. What can a urinalysis reveal about my cat?

One of the main factors we can examine with urinalysis is the pH level of your cat’s urine. Changes in their pH level can indicate infections and certain types of conditions (e.g. kidney disease, bladder stones). The patient’s urine-specific gravity levels may also indicate if they are hydrated or dehydrated, as well as how their kidneys are functioning. Blood glucose levels also reveal signs of diabetes. These are just some of the information that can be examined with a urinalysis.

What can a fecal exam reveal about my cat?

The presence of intestinal parasites (e.g. worms, and coccidia) is one of the main things fecal exams can detect. They can also provide the doctor with insight to other potential issues such as an abnormal bacteria count. They may be recommended if your cat experiences diarrhea, vomiting or sudden weight loss.

How is a urinalysis done on cats?

The procedure is minimally painful. It will feel like any other type of injection for the patient. We place your cat in a comfortable position. Then, we insert a needle/syringe into their bladder and withdraw the urine sample. It can be over in a matter of seconds.
